Stereotactic – Out of the Water (short)

dop / music

Yulia Efimova is the most recognisable swimmer in Russian history. A record number of medals, thousands of followers. In 2021 she puts her career on hold and lives her best life in Los Angeles: rest, the beach, surfing. Two years later eighteen-year-old Evgenia Chikunova sets a world record in Yulia's own distance. For her it is a signal: it is time to come back. Yulia leaves Los Angeles for her home town of Volgodonsk, to train there under her father and, at thirty-one, to take on rivals half her age. Many experts and fans are sceptical about the return: her times now are held against her times then, and the verdict is that there is no place in the arena for an athlete of her age. She gets into shape all the same, and a real chance appears — the Olympic Games, the one competition that counts in four years. 'Out of the Water' was directed by Vitaly Selin, winner of the Documentary programme of the open creative platform Prostor. The programme is curated by Pasha Karykhalin, founder and managing partner of Stereotactic, and Kirill Sorokin, founder of Beat Film Festival.
